Rare early production “large-size” model of the famous WW2 era US Paratrooper Switchblade Knife; manufactured early in the war by Schrade Cutlery in upstate New York. This is a rare early-model PRESTO brand “large” folder with short-lived sabre-clip point blade, jigged bone handle scales and with nickel-silver pins – one of the hardest to find standard-issue American WW2 knives. Similar type is illustrated on pages 70-72 of POCKET KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY book published in 2002 by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see the book’s scan attached).
The knife is used, but it is in much better than average condition for this type. The knife is about 5″ / 12.7 cm overall when closed; the blade is about 3-1/2” / 8.9 cm long. The blade has been re-sharpened; no nicks on the edge; the tip is intact. One side of the blade is lightly initialed with electro pencil with what looks like letters EG . The blade has a tiny bit of a play when opened, but nothing serious. The edge is very sharp still; the spring is nice and tight and works as intended. The blade lock is in perfect working order. The tang is stamped G. SCHRADE / B’ PORT. CT / on one side and PRESTO / PAT PEND-G on the other. Original jigged bone handle scales with very attractive “dark amber” toning are beautiful. One side has one small crack and a small piece of the bone missing near the bolster – see photos. No other detractions ; this type hard-to-find in better grades nowadays. Nickel-silver blade lock, push-button and pins; the bolsters are steel. All handle parts are tight with no play.
This original American WW2 Schrade Presto paratrooper knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. Today most of the surviving American WW2 Schrade Presto paratrooper knife types are in private collections & rarely come up for sale. This type is hard-to-find in any shape or form nowadays – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
