Description
Original WW2 era US Navy Mark I Utility knife manufactured by Robeson Cutlery as No. 20 Utility model. This type is illustrated on pages 9 and 10 in KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the pages’ scans attached). This is the early-issue aluminum-pommel MK1; later in the war Robeson started to produce these knives with hardwood pommels due to the wartime ban on the use of strategic metals for the “non-essential” products. I have one such “wood-pommel” Robison MK1s available for sale; please take a look.
This Mark I is about 10″ / 25.4 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/8″ / 13 cm. The blade has been re-sharpened; the edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact; the edge is clean with no typical nicks or dings. Stacked leather washers handle with colored fiber spacers on ends; aluminum pommel and half- guard. All parts are tight with no play; leather washers are in great condition without the typical “saltwater rot” so many of the WW2 era USN knives are suffering from. Ricasso is stamped ROBESON ShurEdge / No.20 on one side. The scabbard is the post-war issue, probably handmade. The front panel is nicely decorated with a floral pattern; belt hanger is signed is small dots G.L. NININGER and dated March 1955; the back is also initialed G.L.N. The sheath is in great condition, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple still.
This WW2 Robeson ShurEdge MK1 utility/fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage European knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
