WW2 KABAR USN MK2 fighting knife, guard-marked/blued blade type, original early war production all-leather scabbard; excellent overall condition, considering the age.
Original WW2 era famous US Navy Mark 2 “Ka-Bar” fighting knife (the link is a courtesy of Wikipedia) manufactured early in the war by Ka-Bar (Union Cutlery) in Olean, NY. This is the desirable early-production blued blade/marked guard type with an early all-leather scabbard. Mark 2 is a classic American WW2 era fighting knife; this type was used in combat by the US Army and the Navy men alike in all theaters of the War.
The early issue all-leather scabbards had proved to be too fragile in the field – the leather would simply rot away after contact with seawater. Moving forward, the US armed forces procurement had quickly replaced the leather with the more durable composite composition scabbards. Early-production Ka-Bar MK2s with original and correct all-leather scabbards in better grades are hard-to-find nowadays. This MK2 is about 12-1/4″ / 31 cm overall; blued blade is about 7″ / 17.8 cm long. The knife is slightly used, but it is in better-than-average condition for the type. The edge has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. The guard is stamped KA-BAR on one side, U.S.N. MK2 on the other. Stacked leather washers handle with a round hammer-like steel pommel and slightly curved handguard. The handle is tight; all parts are solid with no play; no typical ding marks on the pommel, edge nicks or contact marks on the spine of the blade – this type is scarce this nice.
Original all-leather scabbard is great shape as well, considering the age and typical wear and tear in the field. All original staples and stitching are intact; the keeper is not damaged; the leather is soft and supple still. Some typical oxidation around brass staples is noted for accuracy (cleanable). During the war most of these early MK2s were used in the field as intended; these early MK2s are hard-to-find this nice and complete.
