Description

WW2 French-made German K98 bayonet Chatellerault factory (Staatliche Waffenfabrik), France. Made in 1942, original 1938 Berg & Co scabbard, 1940 G. Singer leather frog. Rare type in great overall condition, considering the age.

WW2 era K98 bayonet for Karabiner 98K” Mauser bolt-action rifle manufactured in 1942 in Chatellerault, Francein under German occupation as indicated by jwh manufacturer’s code on ricasso. French Manufacture d’Armes de Châtellerault was an arsenal long before the war and had always made an excellent quality product, even under the German occupation.

This K98 bayonet is dated 1942 (date stamp 42 on spine at the base of the blade. The bayonet comes with an older 1938-dated blued steel scabbard made by Berg & Co, serial number 8617 on the scabbard’s throat; logo/date are on the back.  Original leather frog was made in 1940 by G. Singer in Klattau – the freshly-renamed city in the French Sudetenland.  The scabbard is in great shape; the frog’s belt hanger has snapped – the frog is good as display only. In spite of the damage the frog is decent shape, considering the age; the leather is soft and supple still.  Original war-time production specimens are very scarce this nice and complete as most were used as intended.

The bayonet is about 15-1/8” / 38.4 cm overall; the blade is about 9-7/8″ / 25 cm long. The blade has retained about 60% of its original gun-blue finish.  The bayonet is slightly used; the blade has been sharpened to a razor-like edge; the tip is intact. Original dark-brown bakelite grips are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The bayonet’s release button is in perfect working order; no contact marks on the pommel. The Waffenamt stamps on the bayonet’s butt and release button are WaA251; scabbard’s tip is sharply stamped WaA253. Almost 80 years after it was made this original WW2 French-made German K98 bayonet Chatellerault factory specimen is in 100% serviceable condition still; this type is scarce this nice and complete. Don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
