Description
Original World War 2 era “Quartermaster” fighting knife in better-than-average condition for the type, original leather scabbard is included. Manufactured by Case & Sons Cutlery Company (CASE XX model 337-6″Q), these heavy-duty fighting/utility knives were a “Cadillac version” of the standard-issue Quartermaster knife. The Quartermaster was modeled as a heavy utility knife designed to open ammo boxes, cargo crates and hammer down nails if needed. The vast majority of these Quartermasters were made by Cattaraugus; CASE’s share was relatively small – a nice find! Quartermasters were very popular with the troops and saw action in every major World War 2 theater. This exact type is illustrated on page 88 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s scan attached).
Most of the Quartermasters were used as intended – working on the ships and in the battlefields; leather washers in handles were prone to rot when exposed to the saltwater so many of the surviving specimens are in pretty rough shape. This knife is in excellent overall condition – intact handle, no edge nicks or dings. The chrome-plated blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. Ricasso is stamped CASE XX on one side, 337-6″Q on the other. “Grooved” stacked leather washers handle with steel handguard heavy-duty hammer-like pommel; all parts are tight with no play; some minor surface rust is noted for accuracy (cleanable). The knife is about 10-7/8″ / 27.8 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/16″ / 15.3 cm. Original brown leather scabbard is in excellent shape, considering the age – the leather is soft and supple; all original stitching, keeper and rivets are intact. Overall, this original WW2 CASE 337-6Q Quartermaster Knife is in great overall condition; a must-have for any serious early CASE collector.
