Classic WW2 era British FS “Fairbairn Sykes” 3rd Pattern fighting dagger with blued dual-edge blade and original metal-tipped leather scabbard. The FS’ 3rd pattern was introduced in 1942 and was manufactured till the end of the war. This exact 3rd pattern FS dagger type is illustrated on page 133 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached). Originally designed as the “commando dagger” for the elite British special-ops forces, these “FS” fighting knives became super-popular with the British and American servicemen stationed in the UK during the war. The allied servicemen carried FS daggers in practically every combat theater in Europe, North Africa and in the Middle East. Looks like one of the US Army Rangers overlooking Anzio beachhead landing (Southern Italy) is sporting one such British-made FS dagger – see the photo scan attached.
This WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes dagger is only lightly used; it is in better-than-average condition for the type; it’s a great-looking combat specimen. The blade is very sharp with no edge damage; grooved cast handle with a thick iron double-guard and a bronze lug nut for the pommel; the handle is stamped with the letter B just under the guard. The pommel is marked with number 2, indication one of the first molds used in the production. Vise marks on the lug nut The underside of the guard is marked ENGLAND; all parts are solid with no play. This 3rd pattern dagger is about 11-5/8″ / 29.5 cm overall; the blade is about 6-7/8″ / 17.5 cm; the tip is intact; about 95% of the original “gun-gray” blade bluing remaining. Original leather scabbard is in great shape overall, considering the age. Leather “wings” are intact; the belt hanger is in excellent shape with no damage. The elastic retention strap is MIA – typical for this type of a scabbard. Original metal scabbard’s tip is in excellent condition with no play. The throat is intact; no typical cuts or “puncture wounds” – this type is rare this nice. Don’t miss your chance to add this original WW2 British Fairbairn Sykes FS dagger to your collection!
