Vietnam War Western L46-6 fighting knife circa 1960th, original leather scabbard included. All parts are tight -100% serviceable condition still; great overall shape, considering the age.
Original Vietnam War era model L46-6 fighting knife manufactured in the 1960th by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado. Western did not officially produce fighting knives specifically for the American GIs in Vietnam, but the L46 type was very popular with the troops and many servicemen privately purchase these handy fighters before getting shipped out. A similar Western Cutlery Fighter is illustrated on page 126 in the book KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY IN VIETNAM by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s scan attached).
This specimen is in better than average condition for the type: no typical ding marks on the spine or aluminum pommel; no rust on the blade; the tip is intact. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened and it is RAZOR-sharp still; ricasso is stamped L46-6 on one side, WESTERN/ BOULDER / COLO. / USA on the other. The wide bronze guard is unmarked, as it was the case with the early Western models. The handle is stacked leather washers with colored fiber spacers on the ends and solid aluminum pommel. The handle is in excellent shape; all parts are tight with no play. This fighting knife is about 10-1/4″ / 26 cm overall; the blade is about 5-7/8″ /15 cm long. Original brown leather sheath is in great condition – the leather is soft and supple; the original keeper is nice and tight. All original rivets and stitching are intact.
Overall, this Vietnam War Western L46-6 fighting knife and its original leather scabbard are in great overall shape; this knife will be a welcome addition to any collection.
