Russia 1897 gold 7.5 Roubles, Nicholas II era rare one-year type. Nicely toned XF specimen with some original luster remaining. FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE U.S. FOR THIS ITEM
This very unusual denomination gold 7-1/2 Roubles specimen was struck at the St. Petersburg mint in 1897. The reason for such a wierd denomination was a monetary reform initiated by the newly-crowned Trar Nicholas II. The new “Imperial” coinage was introduced in 1897; one Imperial was equal to 15 gold Roubles in the new gold standard – quite a lot of money at the time. To aid the commerce and trade and facilitate the transition to the new coinage, a new 7.5 Rouble coin was introduced in 1897. Both new 1897 15-Rouble and 7.5 Rouble denominations have proved to be unpopular and were never struck again. Both types are scarce and are hot collectibles today. The coin is about 6.45 grams, inscription and master’s initials AG (A•Γ) are on the rim. XF condition with some original mint luster remaining; a few typical bag marks and light dings from circulation are noted for accuracy.
This issue had a relatively small mintage. Add periodical mass meltings of gold coins of any kind during the two World Wars, the Russian Civil War, and a repressive Soviet regime, and it becomes apparent why the Imperial Russian coins are so hard to find in any condition these days. A number of the surviving specimens of any given year is probably less than 1/10 of their original mintages.
Not cleaned; these are the actual photos. This Russia 1897 gold 7.5 Roubles coin is guaranteed to be genuine or your money back.
