Description

M1866 Chassepot Yataghan bayonet originally fielded by the French during 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. Was possibly used by the Germans in WW1; battlefield pick-up in relic condition.

This interesting specimen was originally made in France as M1866 “Yataghan sword” bayonet for the Chassepot rifle (Fusil modèle 1866).  The Chassepot was the primary battlefield rifle field by the French during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. France has decisively lost that war to Prussia and tens of thousands of Chassepot rifles were captured by the Germans and later retrofitted with newer handles and/or blades. This specimen came out of an older European collection assembled over 40 years. The previous owner stated that this is the “late WW1 German bayonet recovered in France”.

This bayonet is about 18-1/2” / 47 cm overall; the “Yataghan” style blade is about 21-1/8” / 53.5 cm overall. Original French brass handle has been replaced with the German-style checkered composite handle scales; both are obviously damaged with large chunks missing. The muzzle ring is slightly bent; the tip of the blade is bent as well. All iron parts have rust throughout but some markings on ricasso and cullion are visible still. The locking nub is stuck and does not move; looks like this bayonet has spent many years under ground. Original scabbard is MIA.

This interesting M1866 Chassepot Yataghan bayonet not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as found” condition. These are the actual photos. I have a few scarce WW1 and WW2 bayonets, fighting knives, daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in my store’s Militaria section.
