Thailand silver Lat money Tiger Tongue large ingot monetary unit circulated circa 1500th-1800th in Laos/Thailand. Old hand-poured silver bar; 4.1 oz / 117.5 gm, original goldish-gray patina. NOT a low-grade bronzer alloy; rare as most were chopped-up or melted-down.
Scarce large-size ancient “Tiger Tongue” poured silver ingot, also called Lat money which from the ancient Lan Chang Kingdom in South-East Asia; circa 1500th-1800th. Lan Chang was covering the area that is Thailand and Laos now. Tiger Tongue monetary units originated in the 16th century. In 1707, the Kingdom of Lan Chang divided into the two kingdoms of Luang Prabang and Vientiane which also adopted the Lat currency and continued use such ingots in trade and commerce till the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century most of these heavy silver bars were chopped-up for trade or melted down; these are getting impossible to find, especially in unaltered original condition.
This attractive specimen is about 5″ / 125.5 mm long, about 1″ / 24.6 mm wide at the widest point and about 6.9 mm thick in the center. This is a great-looking vintage silver bar; the pour is nice and even without large blemishes; a test cut on the tip of the bar is noted for accuracy. This Lat “money bar” weights 4.1 oz / 117.5 gm (verified). While originally not made with a high-silver content alloy, this is a real silver “Tiger Tongue” Lat ingot, not one of the low-grade bronze alloy elongated “boat money” bars typically offered for sale. The ingot is in excellent overall condition with very gray with golden overtones patina throughout. The surface has a nice smooth “as made” texture with no typical large dings or punch marks. The ingot still has an original paper collection sticker attached on the back side but it’s pretty hard to read.
