Germany WW1 German Army trench mace raiding club with cast iron spiked head; excellent condition. Rare original Sturmtruppen hand-to-hand trench combat weapon.
Hard to find original WW1 era German “trench raiding” fighting mace with a solid cast iron spiked head and a turned oak handle. These types of weapons proved to be far more effective during hand-to-hand combat in tight trenches and dug-outs than cumbersome standard-issue bayonets or sabers. Imperial German Army was the first to manufacture these “trench maces” on an industrial scale; this Sturmtruppen (storm troops) mace/ trench club is one such example. This trench club was part of a small “bring back” collection of WW1 items most likely accumulated during the war by an American servicemen.
Cast iron head and wood handle are unmarked; no damage to the cast iron. Mace head is secured with two bronze screws; the handle is solid with no play. The mace is about 17-3/4″ / 45 cm overall; mace head is about 2-3/4″ / 7 cm tall. Turn wood handle is made of oak; obvious sighs of use with several nicks close to the mace head. There is a minor crack at the end of the handle; in spite of that the handle is in great overall condition, considering the age. Impressive, awesome, but also sobering and somewhat sad reminder of the nightmarish conditions in the bloody WW1 trenches of the European theatre. Almost 100 years after the conflict ended this original Germany WW1 German Army trench mace raiding club still looks like it’s in 100% serviceable condition. Very interesting and highly collectable original WW1 era German Trench Mace raiding club with a lot of character; it would be a great addition to any collection!
