Germany Karl Goetz 1916 Hofrat Uhl bronze medal (K-184). Rare WW1 era large cast 95mm type; excellent overall condition with original chocolate-brown patina.

Rare WW-I era medal cast to commemorate the war-time Doctor Carl Uhl – the chief medical officer of the auxiliary army hospital (lazarett) in Landshut, Bavaria (Kienast The Medals of Karl Goetz reference #184). This type was only issued in bronze; this is very large medal – about 95.2 mm in diameter; about 287 grams, The medal is in excellent overall condition – no typical rim nicks, dings, oxidation spots, or scratches; the rim has a tiny K GOETZ stamp at 6 o’clock. Original mate finish with very attractive chocolate-brown patina; not cleaned. This WW1 era Germany Karl Goetz 1916 Hofrat Uhl bronze medal came out of an old collection assembled several decades ago.  This scarce WW1 era Carl Goetz medal will be a welcome addition to any collection.

Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WWI Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens, and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.
