Germany Karl Goetz 1914 Red Cross War Dogs medal struck in bronze. Matte finish with original chocolate-brown patina; about 40.4 mm diameter; VERY rare type.

Scarce 1914 Red Cross War Dogs medal struck bronze by the famous German engraver Karl Goetz (Kienast reference #147). Early in the First World War the German Army had utilized specially trained dogs to assist in the search for the wounded servicemen. The “Red Cross” dogs had proved their worth in the field but their use was short-lived due to the horrendous attrition rate in combat. This medal wasn’t issued in great numbers either; finding this type in any shape or form is almost impossible today. The medal weights about 29.6 gm; about 44.4 mm in diameter, Bavarian Mint inscription on the rim. Gourgeous deep chocolate-brown patina throughout, no dings or rim nicks; this specimen is in excellent overall condition, considering the age; .

Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WW1 Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens, and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.

This rare original Germany Karl Goetz 1914 Red Cross War Dogs medal is not a later reproduction or a copy; it is guaranteed to be 100% genuine or your money back. Not cleaned; these are the actual photos. Don’t miss your chance to add this attractive vintage airship memorabilia to your collection!
