Germany Karl Goetz 1914 bronze WW1 alliance medal – German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers marching off to the war (K-135). Rare 85mm cast bronze type in excellent overall condition with original chocolate-brown patina.
The medal still has its original mate chocolate-brown finish and patina; not cleaned. Nice depiction of the German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers enthusiastically marching off to the frontline meatgrinder (Kienast The Medals of Karl Goetz reference #135); the border reads “Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden einen besseren findst du nit – 914” (I had a comrade, you can not find a better one – 1914). This is large medal – about 85.1 mm in diameter; 201.2 grams; no typical rim nicks, dings, or scratches; the rim is stamped K GOETZ. This Germany Karl Goetz 1914 bronze WW1 alliance medal came out of an old collection assembled several decades ago. Looks like it was originally purchased in 1993 or 1995 from Karl Stephens – a well-know and respected professional coin dealer out of CA, USA; original 2×2 coin flip with dates and sale price is included. This scarce early WW1 Goetz medal will be a welcome addition to any collection.
Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WWI Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens, and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.
