Scarce early aviation medal commemorating airship Graf Zeppelin’s famous 1929 flight around the world under the command of Dr. Hugo Eckener (Keiser reference K-510). Rigid-frame airship Graf Zeppelin (German designation Luftschiff LZ 127) was the famous “cigar blimp” designated for carrying passengers and cargo over long distances. One of the largest airships of the time, it had a crew of 36 men and could carry up to 24 passengers. Graf Zeppelin became the most recognized blimp of the time after she completed the first intercontinental flight in 1928 and first around-the-world flight in 1929. Graf Zeppelin and its sister shipLZ129 Hindenburg had an innovative design and were designated for carrying many passengers and cargo over long distances. The passengers aboard Graf Zeppelin traveled in unparalleled luxury and comfort, enjoying their meals in the full-size dining room with dishes served on fine 24K gold-trimmed “ivory” china and silver tableware.
Very attractive original light-gray with goldish undertones patina throughout; this scarce Goetz “airship type” is hard-to-find so nice. The medal is about 36 mm in diameter; 24.88 grams; inscription on the rim reads PREUSS ⋅ STAATSMUNZE ⋅ SILBER 900 FEIN (Prussian State Mint silver .900 Fine in German). Early aviation medals are very collectible and highly though-after by many collectors.
