Rare German silver “shooting medal” struck in 1928 to mark the Federal Shooting Competition in the city of Ulm. The obverse depicts the famous 1811 Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger “flight trial” (that flight didn’t go that well); the reverse side commemorates thy 1st Europe-to-America flight by an airplane call-sign Bremen (successful flight). Bremen’s 1928 Ireland-to-North America flight was a major achievement at the time and it became a global news sensation. A scarce “early aviation” type medal in excellent overall condition – a great find!

Bremen’s crew of three had piloted Junkers model W33 named Bremen; it was piloted by two German pilots: Baron Von Hunefeld and Hermann Kohl. Irish Major James M. Fitzmaurice was the navigator. The crew had to navigate most of the flight with nothing but a just few rudimentary instruments. Eventually, the plane made it to the Canadian territory where it crash-landed in the bog; the crew survived but the plane was damaged and had to be abandoned on site (it has been restored and placed in a museum since). Interestingly, since Major Fitzmaurice wasn’t a German, his face or a name is not present  on this medal, as well as on many other German medals issued to commemorate this event 🙁

About Uncirculated condition with original dark-gray patina. Suspension loop is intact; not cleaned. The medal is about 32×32 mm in diameter; 15.5 grams; inscription on the rim reads 950 SILBER on one side and initials A.R.G. on the other. Early aviation medals are very collectible and highly though-after by many collectors. A scarce “aviation type” medal in great condition – a great find!

This scarce original Germany 1928 silver shooting medal is not a later reproduction or a copy; it is guaranteed to be 100% genuine or your money back. Not cleaned; these are the actual photos.
