Rare post-WW1 German airfield dedication and dead airmen monument opening in Gera city; the medal was struck in 1926; white metal alloy. The obverse depicts an eagle perched on a hill monument dedicated to the fallen airmen. The motif is framed by the inscriptions “WE DIED AVIATORS REMAINED VICTORS THROUGH US ALONE“, “PEOPLE FLY AGAIN AND YOU WILL BE VICTORS THROUGH YOURSELF ALONE” and D.R.G.M. HEZINGER – CRIMMITSCHAU SA. Gera town hall building on obverse.
Scarce type in general; this specimen is in AU condition with original light-gray patina. The medal is about 40.32 mm in diameter; 21.2 gram; plain rim. Early European aviation medals are very collectible and highly though-after by many collectors. This scarce “early aviation type” medal will be a welcome addition to any collection.
