Description

George Wostenholm Sheffield IXL fighting dagger, antique American Civil War era I*XL-marked blade fighter with mother of pearl handle and original leather sheath. Rare type in great condition, considering the age.

Scarce circa 1848th-1880th spear-point blade fighting knife manufactured by the famous “Cutlers to their Majesties” George Wostenholm & Son in Washington Works, Sheffield.  George Wostenholm had been one of the best makers of knives, bayonets, swords, and various cutlery in the British Empire since 1745. Sadly, the company got sold in 1971.

This specimen is in fare condition; the blade has been cleaned and re-sharpened; it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Ricasso is stamped with the famous I✱XL trademark (meaning I Excel) and circa 1848-1880th company logo on one side. Solid full-tang construction with a solid German silver double-guard, pins, and engravable inlay on one side. Handle scales are genuine mother of pearl – a scarce and pretty expensive handle material back in the days. The handle is in very good condition with no major damage or repairs; a few small chips on the pearl on the pommel are noted for accuracy. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 10″ / 25.4 cm overall; the blade is about 5-7/8″ / 15 cm long. Original leather sheath is in very good condition, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple still.  Don’t miss your chance to add this rare George Wostenholm Sheffield IXL fighting dagger to your collection!
