George Wostenholm Sheffield Bowie knife circa 1890th presentation-grade Hunter, German silver handle with polished “tortoise pattern” celluloid scales; rare type in great overall condition.
Scarce Sheffield-made circa 1890th presentation-grade hunting Bowie made by the famous George Wostenholm & Son in Washington Works, Sheffield, GB. Ricasso is sharply stamped with G. Wostenholm patented I∗XL logo; company name/address on the side of the blade. This attractive Hunting Bowie is about 11-3/8″ / 28.8 cm overall; clip-point blade is about 6-7/8″ / 17.5 cm long. The blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact; no edge nicks, dings, or contact marks on the spine or the pommel. Fancy polished “tortoise pattern” celluloid scales with brass liners handle is in excellent shape. Invented in 1855, celluloid was the first true plastic commercially available; celluloid products were all the rave at the end of 19th century. These “tortoise” celluloid handle scales must have been a real eye-catcher back in the 1880th-1890th. The entire handle with the integral pommel is made of German silver; the double-guard is German silver as well. The handle and handguard are finely decorated with floral patterns; all parts are tight with no play. There is no sheath.
