France M1833 naval cutlass original French boarding sword dated 1836, original leather with brass fittings scabbard. Made at Chatellerault factory; scarce type in excellent overall condition, considering the age.
Scarce French model 1833 “Le Sabre d’Abordage” boarding cutlass with original-issue scabbard in excellent condition; made in January 1836 at Chatellerault arms plant (Manufacture de Châtellerault), France. The blade’s spine is engraved with the weapon’s manufacturer’s name and date; the engraving is fully readable still. The M1833 was the most copied naval boarding cutlass in the world; it is a well-made and robust weapon. It was a very practical and effective close-quarters weapon and it had served a number of French wars virtually unchanged. This M1833 specimen is the original, non-modified example, complete with the original-issue matching scabbard.
The cutlass is about 31-7/8″ / 81 cm overall; the blade is about 26-1/3″ / 67.3 cm. Multiple inspection proof marks the scabbard’s brass fittings and the upper part of the bowl guard. No dings on the spine or rust on the blade; the tip is intact; original leather washer is still present. A few small edge nicks are noted for accuracy – undoubtedly the result boarding enemy ships and battling hook-handed pirates. Solid metal bowl guard is intact; the handle was probably repainted black at some point. The pommel is excellent with no contact marks from hammering; all handle parts are tight with no play. The scabbard is in great shape as well; original finish on the leather, all original brass fittings are intact. This France M1833 naval cutlass is in excellent overall condition, considering the age. This type is rare this nice and complete; you will not be disappointed.
This France M1833 naval cutlass has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, this set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos.
