Description

WW2 USAF Pyrotechnic Pistol M-8 dated 1943. Complex hammerless fare gun designed for use in various aircraft and on the ground; made by Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Co (CEVC) during the war. 100% original slightly used condition; mechanically excellent – rare this nice.

Original WW2 era United States Air Force MODEL M-8 PYROTECHNIC PISTOL manufactured in 1943 by Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Co. (abbreviated as CEVC) in Detroit.  Eureka was famous for its vacuum cleaners, but during the war they used their highly skilled labor force to manufacture exclusively the equipment needed for the war effort.

The M-8 Pyrotechnic Pistol was adopted by the US Army Air Force in July 1942. It was a complex gun, as far as flare guns go, designed to be fired in flight from various aircraft with the help of the special fuselage adapter – hence 4 large studs on the barrel meant to lock into the adapter. Right side of the blued steel frame has the factory markings inside a triangle stamp: CEVC / 1943 / U.S. PROPERTY / PISTOL PYROTECHNIC M-8. The serial number (E-109528) is stamped on the back of the handle grip. The gun is slightly used with some surface rust (cleanable) but it’s still in better than average condition for the type; mechanically excellent.  This signal pistol is about 7” by 6-1/4″ overall; the barrel is about 4-1/8″ / 10.5 cm. Handle butt is stamped with the letter P and a small “cannons and wheel” ordnance cartouche.  Steel frame retains about 80% of its original “gun-blue” finish with some minor surface rust.  The barrel is solid  with minor spotting; no pitting on the inside of the barrel. Checkered black plastic grips are very fine with some minor scratches on the butt ridges; nice and crisp checkering overall woth no chips or cracks.

Not cleaned or tempered with; scarce in such uncleaned, authentic condition – a lot of these M-8s have been polished or cleaned to a semi-white condition. Please note: this WW2 USAF Pyrotechnic Pistol M-8 flare gun is not a “firearm” under US law and needs no FFL to transfer or own; this WW-2 era flare gun is obsolete; its spare parts and flares are no longer made.
