Description
Original WW2 era M1905 bayonet manufactured in 1942 by Oneida Ltd (marked OL on ricasso); scarce uncut 16″-blade specimen in rare unused condition. This is a museum-quality specimen; it will be almost impossible to find another OL M1905 in a better grade.
The “OL M1905” is a scarce bayonet type in general – Oneida Ltd produced just 235,000 M1905 bayonets before was it dropped from the bayonet program altogether in November 1943. Oneida had asked the War Department to be released from the bayonet manufacture program. Oneida could not keep its workers steadily employed because of the erratic nature of the stop-ang-go manufacture & bayonets’ recalls for the blade shortening: mid-war most of the original “long blade” M1905 bayonets were cut-down and re-furbished as the “short pattern” 10-inch blade bayonets. These shortened bayonets are often referred to as M1942. Most of Oneida’s original “long” 16-inch bayonets have been shortened during the war; uncut OL M1905s are hard to come by nowadays, especially in unused condition.
This is a well-made bayonet with crisp lines and a well-defined edge; ricasso is sharply stamped OL / US “flaming bomb”/ 1942 on one side. This bayonet is unused; the blade has not been re-sharpened, original factory edge is very sharp; the tip is intact. No typical ding marks on the spine or the muzzle ring; the pommel is excellent with no contact marks. One tiny edge bump near the handle is noted for accuracy. Original black plastic handle grips are near-perfect; all handle parts are tight with no play. The scabbard/bayonet release mechanism is still covered in factory cosmoline; it is excellent and 100% functional. This OL M1905 specimen is in near-perfect condition for the type.
The bayonet is about 20-3/8″ / 51.7 cm overall; the blade is about 15-3/4″ / 40 cm. Original “long” composition scabbard with MK1-marked steel throat is also unused; it is in excellent condition. The US War Department had told the manufactures to “waste nothing”, so they used whatever material was suitable during production, including the unused quantity of scabbard parts intended for training bayonets and discontinued USN MK1 Utility Knife. The underside plate is sharply stamped B2/9N. Steel throat is marked USN / MK 1. Overall, this rare WW2 Oneida Limited M1905 bayonet is in very much serviceable condition still; you will not be disappointed. Very desirable and a highly collectible M1905 type; these uncut OL M1905s are VERY hard-to-find this nice.
This scarce WW2 Oneida Limited M1905 bayonet in rare unused condition has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; these are the actual photos.
