Scarce and desirable early-production “red spacer” Mark 2 fighting knife manufactured by Ka-Bar (Union Cutlery) in Olean, NY. This MK2 comes with original early WW2 issue all-leather scabbard; both have been “theater dressed” in the field. MARK 2 is a classic American WW2 era fighting knife; this type was used in combat by the US Army and the Navy men alike in all theaters of the War. This is a rare MK2 “red spacer” type – only the early MK2s came with the leather scabbard, and even fewer were the so-called “red spacers”. Fancy colored fiber spacers were quickly done away with to simplify the wartime production and reduce costs. And leather scabbards were simply too fragile in the field – the leather would rot away after contact with seawater. Soon the leather was replaced with composite plastic scabbards. An early USN Mark 2 “red spacer” with original correct all-leather sheath is pretty hard to find these days.
This MK2 is about 11-1/4″ / 29 cm overall; the blade is about 6-3/4″ / 17 cm. The blade has been expertly sharpened to a razor-like edge; the tip is intact. Ricasso is marked KA-BAR / OLEAN, N.Y. on one side, original USN or USMC designation has been been filed-off. Stacked leather washers handle with the top red spacer; the standard-issue round iron pommel was replaced in the field with the hand-cut fancy aluminum pommel. The handle is tight; all parts are solid with no play. Original leather scabbard was also “re-dressed” with the leather cord around the edges and a fancy sailor’s knot for a lanyard. The scabbard is in very good condition, considering the age; the leather is still soft and supple; it is in 100% serviceable condition even now. An interesting early “red spacer” MK2 fighting knife in great condition; don’t miss your chance to add this scarce WW2 Ka-Bar MK2 red spacer fighting knife to your collection!
This original WW2 Ka-Bar MK2 red spacer fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage European knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
