Description
Original World War 2 era survival type fighting knife with original compass and leather scabbard is included – listed as short-lived model 309 in Case XX records. Manufactured by Case & Sons Cutlery Company as the top-of-the-line “survival/fighting” version. This “survival” type was not easy to manufacture and was probably a pretty labor-intensive product for the company on the war-production footing; Case made relatively few of these and this type is exceedingly rare nowadays. This exact type is illustrated on page 92 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s scan attached).
The knife is about 9-1/2″ / 24.2 cm overall; mirror-polished blade is almost 5″ / 12.8 cm long. Ricasso is stamped CASE on one side, the other side is hand-engraved Bolles. Stacked leather handle has a hollow compartment secured with an aluminum screw-in cap with the original compass marked FRANCE. The compass is in working condition still; rare this nice as these little things tend to get lost right away. The half-guard is German silver; the handle is solid with no loose or wobbly parts. The chrome-plated blade has been re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. This knife is in great overall condition – the handle is intact, no edge nicks or dings on the spine; all parts are tight.
Original leather scabbard is well-used but it is in very good overall condition, considering the age. All original stitching is intact; the leather is a bit dry but still soft. Original keeper is gone but it’s an easy fix for this type of sheath. Overall, this WW2 CASE XX Survival Knife and its original leather scabbard are in great overall condition; a must-have for any serious early CASE collector. I see the same type offered for sale at $685 on the big “e-lagoon” auction site; you can have it for a lot less here at Argocoins.com.
This rare WW2 CASE XX Survival Knife/fighting knife with original leather scabbard has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, this set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 We have a few more American WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
