WW2 British bayonet conversion fighting knife made from 1900-dated Wilkinson Sword Pattern 1888, original hand-made leather scabbard included; rare type. Very cool an certainly one-of-a kind fighter.
Rare WW2 era fighting knife made from a much-older pre-WW1 era British Pattern 1888 bayonet for Lee-Metford rifle. The original bayonet was manufactured in November 1900 by Wilkinson Sword. Judging from the use of plastics for some of the handle materials I would say that the conversion to a fighting knife happened during WW2; likely British-made as the Lee-Metford has never been issued in the US. This P1888 bayonet was completely stripped of its original handle and muzzle ring; the entire handle was expertly re-done and outfitted with fancy colored spacers and pinned brown Bakelite pommel. The guard is a thick chunk of solid copper skillfully brazed to the blade; hardwood grips, the rivets are poured lead. All parts are tight with no play; whoever did this fighting knife conversion was certainly talented and quite a skillful knifemaker.
This fighter is about 13-1/4” / 33.7 cm overall; the blade is about 8-1/2″ / 21.5 cm long. Original dual-edge bayonet blade was re-worked to be sharpened on one side only; the edge is razor-sharp still, the tip is intact. No nicks on the edge or dings on the spine; the tip is intact. Original hand-made leather scabbard was custom-made to fit the blade. The scabbard is in excellent condition, considering the age; all original staples and stitching are intact; the leather is soft and supple still.
This WW2 British bayonet conversion fighting knife is excellent overall condition for the type – most these “bayonet fighting knives” were used as intended during the war; relatively few specimens survived in better grades; you will not be disappointed! This rare WW2 British bayonet conversion fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition; these are the actual photos.
