Description
WW2 1906 RIA bayonet, pre-WW1 manufacture M1905 bayonet shortened and refurbished during WW-II by AFH, original M7 composition scabbard. Scarce type in excellent overall condition, considering the age.
Original WW2 era M1 bayonet made from the pre-WW1Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) M1905 bayonet that was cut-down to 10-inch blade “M1/M1943” variant. This WW1 era bayonet was cut-down and refurbished as M1 by American Fork & Hoe (the handle’s spine is stamped AFH in small letters). Starting in Spring of 1943, a number of bayonet manufacturers were involved in the shortening of old and new M1905 bayonets. The first shortened bayonets were delivered in September 1943, and deliveries continued at a rate of 40,000-50,000 per month until August 1945. Roughly 1 million “long” M1905 bayonets underwent the cut-down process before the end of the war.
This bayonet is about 13-3/4” / 35 cm overall; “saber-tip” type gun-blued blade is about 9-1/4” / 23.5 cm; the edge is very sharp still, the tip is intact. The original M1905 bayonet that this fighter was converted from was manufactured in 1906 by the famous Rock Island Arsenal. Ricasso is stamped RIA / “flaming bomb” ordinance mark on one side / 1906, and US on the other. Serial number 4530646 is punched in on the side of the guard. Original WW2 issue black plastic handle grips are in great overall condition, considering the age; no cracks or chips. All handle parts tight with no play; bayonet release mechanism is 100% functional. Original WW2 era M7 composition scabbard is in great condition as well. The throat is marked with US “flaming-bomb” ordinance mark on the throat; the throat’s underside plate is sharply stamped B1/5N; iron wire belt hanger is intact.
This scarce M1905 / WW2 1906 RIA bayonet M1/M1943 conversion will make a great addition to any collection. This original WW2 1906 RIA bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it’s in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
