Description

WW1 Sturmmesser M1917 Fighting knife – Austro-Hungarian Empire military issue manufactured by Resicka plant, original metal scabbard. Great overall condition, considering the age.

Scarce World War I era Austro-Hungarian Empire model M1917 “Sturmmesser” (literally – “attack knife” or “assault knife” in German) fighting knife in very good overall condition, complete with the original metal scabbard.  Sturmmesser literally means an “assault knife” in German – a hard to find WW1 fighting knife these days, especially in good condition with the original metal scabbard included. Simple and reliable, the M1917 was popular with the frontline troops fighting the nightmarish trench warfare and it became a desirable battlefield trophy for the Allies. See a group photo of the Austrian sturmtroopers with M1917 Sturmessers stuffed in their boots or hanging of their belts (the photo is not included with the lot).

This specimen is 13″ / 33 cm overall; the blade is about 8-1/8″ / 20.7 cm long. The blade has been re-sharpened, the edge is very sharp still; the tip is slightly intact. Manufactured by the Austrian Resicka plant (capitol R stamp on ricasso); large iron guard is marked with the Imperial double-headed eagle arsenal proof mark on the underside. Solid full tang construction; original hardwood handle scales on three steel pins. Handle grips have not been cleaned or sanded-down; all-original patina throughout. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play.

The original all-metal scabbard is in very good overall condition with about 50% of the original olive-green paint remaining. Not cleaned or repainted – rare as such. The scabbard’s original ersatz leather belt suspension loop is present but it’s broken – typical condition as this type would just fall apart over time. Most of these scabbards are found without the hanger. This rare original WW1 Sturmmesser M1917 Fighting knife & scabbard set is in very good overall condition, considering the age.  This “Sturmmesser” has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition. This type is hard to find these days in better grades – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

This attractive WW1 Sturmmesser M1917 Fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife ? I have a few more German, British, Italian, and American fighting knives, as well as some scarce WW2 and WW1 daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
