Description

WW1 Germany DEMAG Kampfmesser fighting knife trench dagger, original metal scabbard included. Scarce type in rare UNUSED condition.

Original WW1 era German military Kampfmesser (close combat knife) manufactured circa 1916-1918 by Deutsche Maschinefabrik A-G (abbreviated as DEMAG) of Duisburg, German Empire. This exact type is illustrated on page 107 of the excellent French reference book Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 by Christian Mary (see the book’s page scan in the photos).

Sturdy full-tang construction trench knife with wood handle scales, “rifle muzzle fit” iron guard, and original metal scabbard. During WW1 DEMAG was manufacturing the “crank handle” bayonet/fighting knife combination as well; the guards intended for bayonets were used where they could be to simplify the wear-time production and reduce the use of valuable steel.

This dagger is about 11” / 28 cm overall; the blade is about 6” / 15.2 cm. Ricasso is stamped DEMAG / DUISBURG on one side, a small imperial crown – a “fraktur” inspector’s acceptance mark on the other. This fighting knife is in excellent condition for the type – no pitting, dings or nicks on the blade; original leather washer on the blade is still on. The blade has not been re-sharpened, original factory edge is very sharp; the very end of the tip is slightly bent. The blade is still covered with a thin layer rust-preventing elbow grease. Original hardwood handle scales and iron “rifle muzzle fit” guard are nice and tight; original leather washer is intact. All parts are tight with no play. Original metal scabbard with original black finish and original leather belt hanger; about 95% of the original black finish is remaining. The keeper is intact; the leather is soft and supple still; this scabbard is in great overall condition, considering the age.

After 100 plus years this WW1 Germany DEMAG Kampfmesser fighting knife and its original metal scabbard are in 100% serviceable condition still. Today most of the surviving WW1 era Kampfmessers are in private collections & rarely come up for sale. Don’t miss your chance to add this original WW1 Germany DEMAG Kampfmesser fighting knife to your collection!

These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more German era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
