Description
Hard to find pre-WW1 era manufacture M1905 bayonet dated 1912 with original uncut 16″ blade, wood grips and scarce canvass-covered M10 scabbard signed AE PENHOD / RIFLE No J86 – a nice touch. This M1905 was manufactured in 1912 by the famous Rock Island Arsenal – RIA / US “flaming bomb” / 1912 date stamp on ricasso on one side; serial number 234057 on the other. According to the US Chief of Ordnance report, in the 1912 fiscal year, RIA produced only 22,664 M1905 bayonets. The unaltered 16″ blade M1905s are scarce in general – most were cut-down during WW2 and were re-furbished as the short 10″-blade M1 bayonets; a rare find these days.
A superb quality manufacture bayonet with crisp lines and original factory edge on the blade; a few typical dings on original walnut grips are noted for accuracy. The pommel is excellent with no dings; the guard is stamped 13 on the top field; one of the grips is also faintly stamped A13 on one side (a rifle company number??). In spite of a few nicks, original wood grips are tight; all parts are solid with no play. The bayonet release mechanism is too tight (probably needs cleaning). The bayonet is about 20-3/4″ / 52.5 cm overall; the blade is about 16″ / 40.5 cm.
Original canvass-covered M10 scabbard is in great overall condition, considering the age. The leather tip is faintly signed with what looks like Al Penitod / Rifle No. T-86 – probably the GI’s name and personal weapon number?? An interesting piece, to say the least. The M10 scabbard type was issued to the US Marines during WW1 – see WW1 era photo of a young Marine with full combat load; including M1905 bayonet in the M10 scabbard (photo is for the historical reference only and is not included with the lot).
Overall, this rare uncut US RIA M1905 1912 bayonet M10 scabbard and equally scarce original M10 scabbard are in great shape. A desirable and highly collectible pre-WW1 era low-production year M1905; this type is VERY rare this nice.
This rare pre-WW1 manufacture, WW2 era-issue US RIA M1905 1912 bayonet M10 scabbard and its original M10 composition scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition; these are the actual photos.
