Scarce W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co. limited edition NUESTRA SENORA DE ATOCHA Spanish galleon commemorative knife & silver round set that Case issued in 1988. Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha was part of the Spanish fleet on its way to Spain with the cargo of gold, silver, copper, spices and gemstones from the New World when she sunk during the hurricane off the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622. A lartge portion of the precoius cargo was recovered in 1985-1986. The 1 OZT silver round in this commemorative set was made from the 80-pound silver bar recovered from the famous shipwreck.
To mark this event in 1988 Case produced just 960 serialized Nuestra Senora de Atocha knife and “Atocha silver” round sets. This specimen’s serial is 0049 – finely engraved on the nickel-silver bolster. This fantastic knife is showcased in the original hardwood display case with a sliding door decorated with the famous ship sailing away; original correctly-labeled outer cardboard box is also included. The knife is about 5-3/8″ / 13.5 cm closed; the blade is about 4″ / 10 cm long; original factory edge is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. All parts are tight with no play; a couple of minor chips on handle scales are noted for accuracy.
