Very rare WW1 era Marlin Spike sailor’s knife manufactured for the Canadian military by Schatt & Morgan Cutlery in Titusville, PA, USA. Circa 1915 Schatt & Morgan Cutlery made a relatively small quantity of these large folders for the Canadian Navy. Designated by the Ordnance Stores department as “Knife, Clasp, with Marlin Spike and Tin Opener”, this specimen looks pretty much like the early WW1 era British counterparts, except that the American-made sailor knives were of much better quality.  This exact type is illustrated on pages 191 of BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES book Ron Flook – a well-established expert on this subject.

Despite the advanced age, this specimen is in excellent overall condition and very rare as such. This type was typically used in the filed as intended; exposed to the salt water and moisture, most surviving specimens are in poor shape. This large folder is about 5″ / 12.7 cm closed; heavy-duty marlin spike is about 4” / 10.2 cm long; the tip in intact; the spike is nice and tight with no play. Drop-point blade is about 4″ / 10 cm long; the edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact. All blades open and close with a snap; the tin opener blade is in great condition as well. The tang on the main blade is stamped with the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery logo; marlin spoke is stamped with the Canadian “broad arrow” inside letter C arsenal acceptance stamp. Original jigged bone handle scales in near-excellent; no chips or cracks; copper shackle is intact; all handle parts are solid with no play.

This rare Canadian military Canada WW1 Schatt and Morgan navy knife is in excellent overall condition, considering the age. I have never seen these specimens in the condition better than this. Don’t miss your chance to add this scarce military knife in rare unused condition to your collection!
