Rare Bruder Frank 1887-1897 Vienna Austria silver medal on original suspension with very attractive gun-gray patina; pre-WW1 era, Austro-Hungarian Empire
Scarce Austro-Hungarian athletic medal made circa 1887-1897 by the famous Brüder Frank in Vienna -VERY rare sports medal type these days. The Frank Brothers Gold and Silver Factory (Die Gold und Silberwarenfabrik Brüder Frank) was founded in 1887 in Vienna, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Brüder Frank was very well-known in Austria, but also exported to Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and Russia. In 1889 Frank Brothers were represented with several exotic silver pieces in the Special Exhibition of Austrian Art at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, as well as at the exhibition of the Austrian Art Industry 1850-1914.
This award was presented for the 2nd place in the 20 kilometer race; awarded to “M.R.C. Sturmoogel” in October 3, 1897. The “wreath” medallion is about 30 mm in diameter; top part is about 46.3 mm wide; total weight is about 28.3 gm . Vienna “A” proof marks and “BF” maker stamps throughout; “hound head” .800 silver fitness stamp. Original chain suspension and pin; excellent overall condition with attractive dark-gray patina. Not cleaned or tempered with; these are the actual photos. This Bruder Frank 1887-1897 Vienna Austria silver medal is exceedingly rare in any condition these days.
