American Philippines 1936M silver Peso Roosevelt-Quezon scarce commemorative 1-yr type, only 10K minted; NGC graded lustrous MS65. FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE U.S. FOR THIS ITEM!
The Philippines under American administration – rare commemorative One Peso struck at the newly-constructed Manila Mint in 1936 to commemorate the establishment of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. Original mintage was just 10,000 Pesos.
A scarce type in general as the type wasn’t popular and it was not selling well. But this issue is VERY hard-to-find in original mint state as almost the entire issue ended up at the bottom of Manila Bay during the war. The unsold coins were stored within the Philippines Treasury in Manila. In early 1942, to prevent their capture by the advancing Japanese forces, the entire batch of unsold 1 Peso and Half-Peso commemorative issues was packed in crates and dumped in the Manila Bay. Along with them went into the sea about 15 million (!!) Pesos in silver coins, plus medals and other valuables that couldn’t be timely removed to the mainland US. Some of these crates were recovered after the war but many were lost forever. All recovered coins are badly corroded by salt water; original mint-state specimens are rare.
This mint-state specimen has nice goldish-gray patina with some original mint luster remaining; about 35 mm in diameter, 20 grams, reeded rim. Authenticated and graded MS65 by Numismatic Guarantee Corp (NGC); NGC certification number 4226937-005. NGC is one of America’s best and most stringent grading services.
