Original WW2 era American fighting knife manufactured during the war by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado – this type is commonly known as the “Shark” model fighting knife. This handy knife was very popular with the troops and thousands were used as intended in virtually every theater of the war. This is an early-production Type 1 Shark with the bronze guard and solid aluminum pommel – later issues had iron guards and Bakelite pommels since bronze and aluminum became strategic materials strictly conserved for the war effort. This type is illustrated on page 233 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see page’s scan attached).
Stacked leather washers handle with colored fiber spacers at the ends; bronze guard and solid aluminum pommel. The handle is tight; all parts are solid with no play; leather lanyard cord is probably a recent addition. No dings on the pommel; the blade’s spine intact without the typical nicks or contact marks. Most of these Shark fighting knives were used in the field as intended; this type is not particularly scarce but it is hard to find in such great condition. This fighter is about 10-1/4″” / 26 cm overall; fullered “bright finish” blade is about 6″ /15.2 cm long. Original finish on the blade; it has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. There is no scabbard. This Western Cutlery Shark is in excellent overall shape, considering the age; with proper it will last you another 75 years 😉
This original WW2 Western Shark fighting knife 6in blade bright finish type has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it’s in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos. I have a few more American WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 German, French, and British fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
