A scarce WW2 era American utility/fighting knife manufactured during the war by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado. This is a harder to find WW2 era US issue “Baby Shark” model utility-fighting knife issued to the USAF crews during the war as an all-purpose fighting/survival knife in case of a bail-out. This exact type is illustrated on page 49 of the US MILITARY KNIVES, BOOK TWO by M.H. Cole and on page 234 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – both men are well-established experts an authors of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the page’s scan attached).
This specimen is a nice example of an early-issue bronze double-guard/aluminum pommel type. During the war Western Cutlery and the rest of the knife manufacturers had to replace aluminum and bronze fittings with Bakelite plastic due to the wartime ban on the use of the strategic metals for the “non-essential” products. Stacked leather washers handle with colored fiber spacers on the ends; solid aluminum pommel and bronze guard. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. The pommel has a few typical contact marks; the guard is nice and tight. The knife is about 9″ / 23 cm overall; fullered blade is about 4-3/4″ /12 cm long; super-sharp still; the tip is intact; a couple of dings on the spine are noted for accuracy. Leather scabbard seems to be a hand-made replacement; it’s in very good shape overall, considering the age. Unfortunately the keeper is broken at the snap; all original stitching is intact. With proper care this knife will last you another 75 years 😉
This attractive “Baby Shark” WW2 Western Pilot Knife and scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage European knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
