WW2 Western Baby Shark Pilot Knife bright blade finish, aluminum pommel – a scarce type. Issued to USAF crews the “bail-out knife”, original leather scabbard included; great overall condition, considering the age.

A scarce WW2 era American utility/fighting knife issued to the USAF; manufactured during the war by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado. This is a more scare WW2 era US issue “Baby Shark” model utility-fighting knife issued to the USAF crews during the war as an all-purpose fighting/survival knife in case of a bail-out over unfriendly territory. This type is illustrated on pages 49 of the US MILITARY KNIVES, BOOK TWO by M.H. Cole and on page 234 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – both men are well-established experts an authors of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see page scans attached with the photos).

Scarce early-issue type with a solid aluminum pommel – during the war Western had switched to the use of Bakelite as the material for knife handles in order to conserve bronze and aluminum the war effort.  Stacked leather handle hashers with colored fiber spacers handle; iron guard and aluminum pommel. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play; a few typical contact marks on the pommel are noted for accuracy. The knife is about 9″ / 23.2 cm overall; fullered “bright finish” blade is about 4-1/2″ /12 cm long. The leather sheath is original to the knife but the keeper is missing – an easy fix.  The stitching is intact; the leather is soft and supple still.

This attractive WW2 Western Baby Shark Pilot Knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it’s in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 We have a few more American WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
