Description

WW2 theater-made fighting knife made from WW1 Springfield Armory M1905 bayonet dated 1917, orig one-of-a-kind custom scabbard included. RARE WW-II era American bowie-tip type fighter in excellent overall condition, considering the age.

Very rare WW2 era fighting knife made from the WW1 era M1905 bayonet that was cut-down, stripped of the muzzle ring, bayonet release mechanism, and a portion of the pommel. Similar types are illustrated in the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons.

This fighting knife is about 13.5” / 36 cm overall; a scarce bowie-tip grind blued blade is about 8” / 22 cm; the edge is very sharp still, the tip is intact. The original M1905 bayonet that this fighter was converted from was manufactured during WW1 by the famous Springfield Arsenal (SA) in 1917. Ricasso is stamped SA / 1917 / US “flaming bomb”  ordinance mark on one side,  arsenal serial number US / 746336 on the other. Original WW-2 issue black plastic handle scales are great overall condition, considering the age; no cracks or chips; all parts tight with no play. Original custom-made two-part scabbard is one-of-a-kind. The outer shell is expertly made from brown leather and is design to accommodate the standard-issue WW2 era M7 composition scabbard. The inner part is the M7 scabbard the the belt hanger part removed; it fits perfectly in the outer shell.  The leather scabbard is in excellent condition; the leather is soft and supple still. All-original keeper, stitching, and rivets; the keeper is a bit dry but intact. The plastic part is in good overall shape but the tip is damaged. But it does not effect the functionality of the scabbard when it is inserted in the outer leather shell.

This scarce WW2 theater-made fighting knife / bayonet conversion type will make a great addition to any collection. This is one of the best WW2 era “non-regulation” US fighting knives with a lot of character, you will not be disappointed! This rare original WW2 theater-made fighting knife/M1905 bayonet conversion has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way,  it’s in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
