Original WW-2 era American fighting knife made by Robeson Cutlery. This is a so-called “private purchase” fighting knife that Robeson was manufacturing during the war in order to satisfy the demand for quality fighting blades. Not particularly rare WW2 fighting knife, but this type is scarce in high grades / in nice presentable condition. This exact type is illustrated on pages 214-215 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see pages scans attached).
This fighting knife is about 10-1/2” / 26.7 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/8″ / 15.5 cm. The edge is excellent with no nicks – it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers handle with steel guard and hammer-like pommel. All parts are solid; the handle is tight with no play. The knife comes with WW2 era navy-gray NORD composition scabbard. The scabbard is used with rust stains on the webbing a a crack on one of the ribs, but firs the knife perfectly and it’s in 100% serviceable condition still. The front of the steel throat is stamped U.S.N. MK2 (probably a production over-run misfit); markings on reverse indicate the manufacturing contract ID with final deliveries to the Navy in early 1945.
