Original WW2 era US Navy early issue of Mark I Utility knife in its correct MK1 Navy-gray composition scabbard. Manufactured early in the war by Pal Cutlery using the stock or recently-purchased Remington blades – Pal’s knife model RH-35 (RH stands for Remington Hunter). This type is illustrated on pages 9 and 10 in KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the pages’ photos attached). Relatively common type, but hard in good condition since the majority of the these early MK1 knives were used as intended during the war – so most got worked to death, were broken, lost, or fell apart from contact with salt water.
Early “aluminum pommel” RH-series MKI production – on later MK1s Pal replaced solid cast aluminum with war-expedient wood pommels as aluminum was needed for the aviation industry. This Mark 1 is about 10-1/4″ / 26 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/4″ / 13.3 cm. Blade was re-sharpened, but not harshly; it’s razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers and iron guard handle; the pommel is nice and clean with no typical ding marks; all handle parts are tight with zero play. Ricasso is stamped RH-35 PAL/ MADE IN U.S.A. on one side and U.S.N. / MARK 1 on the other. Original navy-gray NORD composition scabbard is in practically unused condition; scarce this nice. The front of the steel throat is stamped U.S.N. MK 1; reverse is marked NORD -8114 / B.M. Co vp. In spite of its advanced age, this WW2 PAL RH35 MK1 Fighting Knife / Utility Knife with its original NORD composition scabbard is in 100% serviceable condition still.
