Description

WW2 PAL MK1 fighting knife/utility knife; 5-inch parkerized blade, original 1945 NORD gray composition scabbard. Nice set in excellent overall condition, considering the age.

Original WW2 era US Navy Mark I fighting knife with original Navy-gray NORD scabbard. This specimen was manufactured during the war by PAL Cutlery Co.; rare PAL factory CARE AND USE OF YOUR KNIFE paper is included. This Mark 1 is in slightly used condition, original MK1 composition scabbard. Parkerized 5.3″ blade retained about 90% of its original parkerized finish; no contact marks on the edge or the spine. PAL Mark 1s are not particularly scarce, but this type is hard to find in better grades as most of these handy knives were used as intended during the war. This exact type is illustrated on pages 9 and 10 in KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the pages’ photos attached).

This Mark I has the stacked leather washers & colored fiber spacers handle with aluminum pommel and steel handguard. All handle parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 10-3/8″ / 26.2 cm overall; the blade is about 5.3″ / 13.5 cm long. The tip is intact; the edge has been lightly re-sharpened; it is very sharp still. The blade’s ricasso is stamped RH-35 PAL MADE IN U.S.A. on one side and U.S.N. / MARK I on the other. Not the type to miss a good business opportunity, PAL Cutlery had purchased the cutlery division of Remington Arms in 1940. After PAL moved the old Remington equipment and knife stock to Holyoke, MA, they began manufacturing knives using the left-over stock parts with the Remington emblem (RH stands for Remington Hunter). Original “navy-gray” NORD composition scabbard was made by Victory Plastics division of Beckwith Manufacturing (B.M. Co.). The numbers on the back of the throat indicate delivery date to the Navy as March 1945. This specimen was part of the first batch of new composition-materials model that had replaced the early-war all-leather scabbards.  The scabbard is in great condition with original finish; no stains on the webbing or rust spots on the steel throat; this MK1 set is in excellent 100% serviceable condition. Most of Mark 1 knives were used in the field as intended; specimens in better grades are hard to find nowadays – this WW2 PAL MK1 fighting knife will be a great addition to any collection.

This attractive WW2 PAL MK1 fighting knife / utility knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
