Original WW2 era M1905 bayonet manufactured in 1942 by Oneida Limited (OL). This is a rare dated and uncut 16″-blade specimen – Oneida Limited manufactured just 150,000 of M1905s in 1942, the rest of the OL production were shorter M1 bayonets. To make things worse for today’s collectors, most of the “long” M1905 bayonets had blades cut-down to the new 10-inch standard during the war; the uncut Oneida M1905s are VERY hard to come by nowadays.
This is a well-made bayonet with crisp lines and a well-defined edge; ricasso is sharply stamped OL / US “flaming bomb” / 1942 on one side and a rare short-lived Ordnance Escutcheon (wheel with cannons) stamp the other. The “wheel-n-cannons” escutcheon represents the Ordnance’s final inspection. This stamp was used for just a few months and was quickly abandoned in favor of a simplified, war-expedient manufacturing process.
This bayonet is used but it’s in better than average condition for the type; the blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact. I’m guessing the blade has been re-blued at one point; no edge nicks or bumps. The spine is clear with no typical ding marks; the muzzle ring is excellent; the pommel has a few contact marks. Black plastic handle grips are in great shape; all handle parts are tight. The scabbard/bayonet release mechanism is excellent and 100% functional. The bayonet is about 20-1/2″ / 52 cm overall; the blade is about 15-7/8″ / 40.5 cm. Original WW2 era composition is marked with US “flaming-bomb” ordinance mark on the metal throat. The scabbard is in great overall condition, considering the age; this type is scarce this nice.
Overall, this rare WW2 Oneida Limited OL M1905 bayonet is in excellent condition. A desirable and highly collectible type; VERY rare this nice. This rare M1905 bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition; these are the actual photos.
