Description

WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife; dual-edge 7.25-inch blade, genuine stag handle, original leather scabbard. Rare type in excellent overall condition – don’t miss your chance to add this beauty to your collection!

Rare original WW2 era “New Caledonia” type huge fighting knife with a large spear-point blade, a very generous stag handle and an original leather scabbard. These handy fighters were made during the war by the local craftsmen on the island of New Caledonia from the locally available materials and stag of a native deer. The locals made a brisk business selling these attractive fighting daggers to the passing Allied sailors and the Marines. This is one of the scarcer types of the “private purchase” fighting knives – this exact type is illustrated on page 139 of THEATER MADE MILITARY KNIVES OF WW2 book by Bill Wright – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).

This specimen is only slightly used; some minor surface spots near ricasso are noted for accuracy. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. No markings on the blade or on the handle; which is pretty common for the type. The handle is a well-formed piece of a deer stag secured with 2 pins; large oval handguard is made of a solid chunk of bronze’ all parts are tight with no play. The handle has one age-related crack under the guard on one side but the handle is structurally sound. This massive fighting knife is about 12″ / 30.5 cm overall; the blade is about 7-1/4″ / 18.5 cm long.

Original leather scabbard is included – it is in excellent condition still, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple; all rivets and stitching are tight and intact; the top part of the hanger is stamped 227. Overall, this original “private purchase” WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still. With proper care it will last you another 80 years 😉 This rare WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife was part of the diverse collection of militaria items that I’ve recently purchased spanning from WW1 to the War in Vietnam. This personal collection contains many interesting itemssome are unique, but there is just too much work to list it all at the same time. Please check out my site periodically for new arrivals; I’ll be listing more items in the next few weeks.

This interesting and certainly one-of-a kind WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have more WW2 era American, British, Australian, New Zealand, and German fighting knives, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers, bayonets and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
