Description

WW2 MK1 fighting knife PAL RH35 model USN utility knife, original leather scabbard initialed FWZ. Great overall condition; scarce this nice.

Original WW2 era US Navy Mark I fighting/utility knife with original owner-initialed leather scabbard. Manufactured during the war by PAL Cutlery Co.  Parkerized 5-1/4″ blade with parkerized finish; no contact marks on the edge or the spine, the edge has been lightly re-sharpened. PAL Mark 1s are not particularly scarce, but this type is hard to find in better grades as most of MK1s were used as intended during the war. This type is illustrated on pages 9 and 10 in KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the pages’ photos attached).

This Mark I has the stacked leather washers & colored fiber spacers handle with aluminum pommel and steel handguard. All handle parts are tight; the pommel is solid with no play; parkerized guard is excellent and rust-free. The knife is about 10-1/8″ / 25.7 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/4″ / 13.3 cm long. The tip is intact; the edge is very sharp still; one side of the blade has been polished. Ricasso is stamped RH-35 PAL MADE IN U.S.A. on one side; the USN MARK I markings on the other side have been almost entirely polished away.

These blades were not originally manufactured by PAL. Not the type to miss a good business opportunity,  in 1940 PAL Cutlery had purchased the cutlery division of Remington Arms. After PAL moved the old Remington equipment and knife stock to Holyoke, MA, they began manufacturing knives using the left-over stock parts with the Remington emblem (RH stands for Remington Hunter).

Original early leather scabbard is owner-initialed FWZ on the front of the throat.  The scabbard is in excellent condition, considering the age – the leather is soft and supple. All stitching and rivets are intact; this scabbard is in 100% serviceable condition still. Most of Mark I knives were used in the field as intended; this type is rare in better grades.

This WW2 MK1 fighting knife PAL RH35 model and original leather scabbard has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos. We have several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
