WW2 era Marbles Ideal fighting knife w large 6″ blade, original leather scabbard signed Edwards, CBMU-542, PLT 3 (USN Seabees 542nd Battalion, 3rd Platoon). Rare type in excellent overall condition.

Original WW2 era MARBLE’S IDEAL model fighting/hunting knife  attributed to one of the famous US Navy Seabees – a member of the 542nd Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU), which was very active in the Pacific theater from 1943 until its deactivation in December 1945 (the printout of the unit’s deployment dates/brief historical information will be included with the knife). The knife sports a beefy 6-1/8″ blade, wide bronze double-hilt and initialed pommel handle, and comes with the original sailor-signed leather scabbard. Proudly made in Gladstone, Michigan, USA circa late 1930th-early 1940th. Marble’s was one of the best US makers of hunting knives, axes and other outdoor gear since 1898. With the onset of WW2 Marble’s had quickly adapted to the new market and begun manufacturing a “militarized” double-hilt Ideal model in various blade sizes that were better suited for the needs of the American servicemen. The demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the war was high; many GIs had privately purchased Marble’s knives and carried them through every major WW2 theater. A similar Marble’s Ideal fighting knife type is illustrated on page 180 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the page’s photo attached).

This large Ideal is only slightly used; it’s in much better than average condition for the type. Original leather scabbard in in excellent shape, considering the age; the leather is relatively soft and supple still. The back is signed Edwards CHHS. E. EM 1/c  /  CBMU 542 PLT. 3. The knife is about 10″ / 25.4 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/8″ / 15.5 cm. The blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact; vintage 3-line Marble’s logo on ricasso. Stacked leather washes handle with brass and red-n-black fiber spacers; original Marble’s No. 45 IDEAL factory sticker is still on the handle – VERY rare this nice and comp0lete. Aluminum “small nut” pommel and bronze double-hilt guard; the pommel is initialed with the letter E (for Edwards) on both sides. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. Overall, this rare large WW2 Marbles Ideal fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still; don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

This original WW2 Marbles era Ideal fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original condition.
