WW2 Germany Alexander Coppel K98 bayonet (42fnj), 1937-dated JOS CORTS metal scabbard, leather frog included. Great condition overall; scarce this nice and complete.
Original WW2 era German bayonet for “Karabiner 98K” Mauser bolt-action rifle. Manufactured in Solingen in 1942 by Alexander Coppel, as indicated by the manufacturer’s code number on ricasso 42fnj. German Alexander Coppel had always made an excellent quality product, even in the middle of the war as the resources and quality materials became scarce.
The bayonet comes with an older 1937-dated blued steel scabbard made by JOS CORTS Sn (serial numbers 9637c and JOS CORTS Sn /1937 on the scabbard’s throat) and the original leather frog. The frog is in great overall condition, considering the age; the leather is soft; the keeper is intact. The bayonet is only slightly used with original blunt factory edge. Original war-time production specimens are very scarce this nice and complete as most were used as intended.
The bayonet is about 15-1/8” / 38.4 cm overall; the blade is about 9-7/8″ / 25 cm long. The blade has retained about 50% of its original gun-blue finish; the edge is in as-issued condition (blued and un-sharpened); the tip is intact. Original dark-brown bakelite grips are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The bayonet’s release button is in perfect working order; no contact marks on the pommel. Ricasso is stamped with the manufacturer’s code 42fnj on one side and the production series number 1911h on the other. The Waffenamt stamps on the bayonet’s butt and spine plane are WaA518; scabbard’s tip is stamped as well but I can’t make out the numbers.
Almost 80 years after it was made this original WW2 Germany Alexander Coppel K98 bayonet and its original scabbard/frog are in 100% serviceable condition still; this type is scarce this nice and complete. Don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
