An interesting WW2 fighting knife made from the WW1 era M1905 bayonet manufactured in 1913 by the famous Rock Island Arsenal – RIA / US “flaming bomb” / 1913 date stamp on ricasso on one side; serial number 241814 on the other. According to the US Chief of Ordnance report, in the 1913 fiscal year, RIA produced only 18,855 M1905 bayonets. Also, this is the more scarce “bowie tip” fighting knife WW2 conversion – a nice find! This type is illustrated on page 176 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).
During the conversion the original 16″ blade was shortened to about 7-3/4″ / 19.6 cm; the muzzle ring was removed completely and the guard shortened. The rest of the handle remains “as is”; bayonet release is 100% functional; the pommel is very good without the typical dings. Black plastic grips are tight; all parts are solid with no play. This fighting knife is about 12-3/8″ / 31.5 cm overall; the blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Original WW2 era M7 composition scabbard is very good, considering the age; a thin crack on the rib near the tip is noted for accuracy. This interesting WW2 era “ex-bayonet fighting knife” will be a great addition to any collection!
This WW2 fighting knife M1905 bayonet conversion has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
