Description

WW2 fighting knife M1 bayonet conversion – made from M1 overruns, scarce “bowie tip” type, wood grips; original composition scabbard. Great overall condition, considering the age.

An interesting WW2 era American fighting knife made from M1 bayonet production overruns in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives during the war. Re-fitting was done at the factory as the bayonet is expertly shortened, re-tooled, and the blade re-blued. This exact type is illustrated on page 176 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).

This very practical knife in slightly used; the blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Scarce “bowie tip” type fighter; the knife is about 11-1/4″ / 28.5 cm overall; blued blade is about 6-3/4″ / 17 cm. Ricasso is unmarked – this bayonet has never been completed before the conversion. War-expedient wood grips are tight (one side has a chip near the pommel); muzzle ring and bayonet release mechanism have been removed to lessen the weight.  Original WW2 era composition scabbard seems to be a shortened M7; it’s in good shape, considering the age. A few dings and contact marks on the ribs are noted for accuracy. This interesting WW2 era “ex-bayonet fighting knife” will be a great addition to any collection!

This original WW2 fighting knife M1 bayonet conversion type fighter has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉
