Description

WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes style commando dagger, large 8.25″ blued blade, original hand-made scabbard included. Rare type in excellent condition for the type; scarce this nice.

This is a rare variation of the classic WW2 era British Fairbairn Sykes (FS) fighting dagger listed in several sources on the subject of the British fighting knives. The original Fairbairn Sykes fighting knives were designed as “commando daggers” for the elite British special-ops forces. These “FS” daggers became super-popular with the British and American servicemen stationed in the UK during the war. The allied servicemen carried FS daggers in practically every combat theater in Europe, North Africa and in the Middle East. Many variations of the original FS design exist; some produced in fairly large numbers; others were custom-made and one of a kind. This specimen has larger-than-usual 8-1/4″ / 21 cm blued blade but the basic form is very similar to the “standard” FS 3rd pattern manufactured by the British during the war. I took a photo of this dagger right next to the “standard-issue” 3rd Pattern for comparison – please take a look.

This particular specimen has a very distinct handle pattern: red and brown Bakelite spacers  with a thick oval steel guard and a round brass lug nut for a pommel. I guess a number of these were made by some very  talented but unknown knifemaker; this type occasionally comes up for sale but far less frequently than the “standard” FS. This exact dagger type is illustrated as one of the British-made weapons on page 100 of the THE MILITARY KNIFE & BAYONET book by Homer Brett – a well-established expert an author of several books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached). Another example of this FS type is featured on the pages of the excellent source of related information The Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knives website dedicated to the Fairbairn Sykes fighting dagger origins and history.

This WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes style commando dagger looks only slightly used. Blued blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact; over 95% of the original blueing is intact – VERY rare this nice. Staked red and brown bakelite washers handle with iron guard and domed bronze lug nut; no dings or contact marks on the the pommel or the rest of the handle.  The spacers had shrunk a bit so the guard has a tiny bit of a play but overall the handle is tight. The dagger is completely unmarked; it’s about 13-1/4″ / 33.5 cm overall; the blade is about 8-1/4″ / 21 cm long. Original handmade scabbard seem to be sewn together from a piece of a harness strap and the standard-issue web belt with a brass buckle; the leg tie is a leather cord. The scabbard is in great shape; all stitching is intact intact; leather keeper is nice and tight – this type is scarce this nice and complete. Don’t miss your chance to add this original WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes style commando dagger to your collection!

This interesting WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes style commando dagger has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot ?  I have several fighting knives made from converted sabers, as well as some scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
