Description

WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes 2nd pattern dagger blued blade type, original metal-tipped leather scabbard. Rare early FS fighting knife in excellent overall condition, considering the age.

Classic early WW2 era British FS “Fairbairn Sykes” fighting dagger with blued dual-edge blade and original metal-tipped leather scabbard. This is FS’ 2nd pattern manufactured early in the war; this dagger is unbranded but it was likely made by Wilkinson Sword, as indicated by the typical wise grip marks on the pommel. This exact  FS dagger type is illustrated on page 128 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scans attached). Originally designed as the “commando dagger” for the elite British special-ops forces, these “FS” fighting knives became super-popular with the British and American servicemen stationed in the UK during the war. Allied servicemen carried FS daggers in practically every combat theater in Europe, North Africa and in the Middle East. Looks like one of the US Army Rangers overlooking a beachhead landing in Algeria is sporting one such British-made FS dagger  – see the photo scan attached (photo is for reference only).

This WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes dagger in in excellent unused condition – this type is VERY hard to find this nice and complete as most were used in the field as intended. Original factory edge on the blade; the tip is intact. Knurled cast bronze handle is unmarked as intended.  The underside of the guard is marked ENGLAND on one side, “broad arrow” / B2 arsenal acceptance stamp; no dings or contact marks on the grooves, guard, or the blade’s edge – rare this nice.  Typical vise-marked narrow-nob bronze pommel and thick iron handguard; all parts are solid with no play; a couple of tiny contact marks on the bronze are noted for accuracy. This dagger is about 11-5/8″ / 29.5 cm overall; the blade is about 7″ / 17.8 cm; the tip is intact; about 99% of the original blade bluing remaining. Original leather scabbard is in great shape overall, considering the age. Leather “wings” are intact; the belt hanger part  is in great shape with no damage; a flimsy elastic band is torn as common for the type; the top of the hanger is stamped INGLAND; an old collection No. 4 inventory sticker is taped to the hanger’s back (could be removed). Original metal scabbard’s tip is in great shape with no play; some typical oxidation around brass rivets and on the tip is noted for accuracy (cleanable). The throat is intact; no typical cuts or “puncture wounds” – this type is VERY scarce this nice. Don’t miss your chance to add this original WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes 2nd pattern dagger to your collection!
