Description

WW2 era USMC dagger with Fairbairn-Sykes blade, well-decorated custom leather scabbard. A unique fighting knife in excellent overall condition.

An interesting WW2 era fighting knife made around the British second or third pattern Fairbairn-Sykes fighting dagger blade. A certainly one of kind fighting knife; possible made on a US Navy ship as it was often the case with American “theater knives”.  The blade came from the “standard-issue” FS dagger; the handle seems to be cast aluminum with machine-cut “bands” for a better grip. Several “regular” WW2 era FS 3rd pattern daggers are illustrated on page 133 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached). The Fairbairn-Sykes stiletto was originally designed as the “commando dagger” for the elite British special-ops forces, these “FS” fighting knives became super-popular with the British and American servicemen stationed in the UK during the war. The allied servicemen carried FS daggers in practically every combat theater in Europe, North Africa and in the Middle East.

This dagger is only slightly used; it is in much better than average condition for the type – rare as such. The blade has been very gently sharpened; the edges are razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Solid cast aluminum handle and guard; all parts are tight with no play.  This dagger is about 11-1/4″ / 28.5 cm overall; the blade is about 6-7/8″ / 17.5 cm; the blade has a nice original light-gray patina throughout; a couple of minor surface rust spots are noted for accuracy. The nicely-decorate leather scabbard looks to new to be WW2 era; possibly made to fit the knife after the war. The front is decorated with a nice “twisted rope” pattern and letters USMC super-embossed on the leather.  The leather seems to be made from and old brown piece that was died black. All original stitching and rivets are intact; the leather is soft and supple. This interesting WW2 era USMC dagger with Fairbairn-Sykes blade has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition.

These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉  I have a few more American, British, Commonwealth, and German WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
