Description

WW2 era EGW fighting knife, scarce wood handle type, original leather scabbard; great overall condition, considering the age.

Original WW2 era EGW “private purchase” type fighting knife; manufactured during the war by E.G. Waterman Company in New York. This is one of the more scarce solid wood handle specimens. E.G. Waterman Company made these sturdy private-purchase Fighters in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. This type is illustrated on pages 114-115 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scans attached).

These “private purchase” fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war; most of these knives were used as intended – in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW’s high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the war in presentable condition. This is a specimen with a more scarce rosewood handle; most of the EGW knives had stacked leather washers handles. An unusually well-made example with well-defined form and clean lines;  the blade is sharply marked EGW KNIFE  / U.S.A. on ricasso.

This knife is in slightly used condition; the edge is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact, no dings on the spine or rust spots anywhere. A two-piece rosewood handle with a steel guard, pommel, and a lanyard ring. The handle is tight; wood halves have a few age-related thin cracks but the handle is solid and sound; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 11″ / 28 cm from the tip to the lower tang; the blade is about 6-3/8″ / 16.2 cm. Leather scabbard is used but it is in solid serviceable condition – the leather is soft and supple; all original stitching and rivets are intact. Despite the advanced age this WW2 era EGW fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still.

This original American WW2 EGW fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot ? I have a few more American, German, British, Italian, and French fighting knives, as well as some scarce WW2 and WW1 daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
